Fencing & Boundaries

High-quality equestrian fencing designed for safety and longevity.

Secure and stylish boundaries

Fencing is one of the most visible and important aspects of any equestrian property. It needs to be strong enough to contain horses safely, durable enough to withstand the elements, and aesthetically pleasing to complement your landscape.

At CDS Arenas, we supply and install a range of equestrian fencing solutions, from traditional post and rail to specialised arena fencing. We use only pressure-treated timber and high-quality fixings to ensure your boundaries stay secure for years to come.

Arena Fencing

Purpose-built arena surrounds with gates, designed to keep surfaces contained and provide a safe perimeter for training. Arena fencing is typically lower than paddock fencing and often includes kickboards along the base to prevent surface material from escaping under the bottom rail. We install single or double gates wide enough for machinery access for harrowing and surface deliveries.

Post & Rail

The classic equestrian choice. We offer 2, 3, or 4 rail options using square or half-round timber to suit your preference. All posts are set a minimum of 600mm deep in the ground for stability, and we use galvanised nails or coach bolts rather than screws that work loose over time. Posts are typically spaced at 2.4m or 3.0m centres depending on the rail length and terrain.

Gates & Access

Installation of heavy-duty timber or galvanized metal gates for paddocks, yards, and arena entrances. We hang gates on substantial posts set in concrete to prevent sagging. Gate widths are planned around your needs — wide enough for a horse box or tractor where needed, with secure latches that can be operated easily while handling a horse.

Choosing the right fencing

Different areas of your property have different fencing needs. Here is a quick guide to help you decide which type suits each situation.

Fencing Type Best For Height Key Features
3-rail post & rail Paddock boundaries 1.1m – 1.3m Strong, visible, classic look. Most popular choice for horse paddocks.
4-rail post & rail Stallion paddocks, roadsides 1.3m – 1.5m Extra height and visibility for areas where security is a priority.
Arena fencing Riding arenas 1.0m – 1.2m With kickboard. Contains the surface and provides a clean working boundary.
Post & wire Large field perimeters 1.1m – 1.3m Cost-effective for long runs. Stock wire or plain wire with timber posts.
Electric tape on timber Strip grazing, temporary divisions Variable Flexible and reconfigurable. Timber posts with insulators for electric tape.

Quality materials, expert installation

  • Pressure-treated UC4 timber for maximum lifespan in ground contact. UC4 treatment means the preservative penetrates deep into the wood, protecting against rot and insect damage even when permanently buried in soil.
  • Bespoke solutions for uneven ground and challenging boundaries. We step or rake rails to follow the natural contour of the land rather than leaving gaps at the bottom that horses could roll under.
  • All posts set in well-compacted hardcore or concrete depending on ground conditions. Corner and gate posts are always concreted in for maximum strength.
  • Rails fixed to the inside of posts so that pressure from horses pushes the rail against the post rather than levering it off. A small detail that makes a significant difference to longevity.

Old fencing removal

If you have old, damaged, or dangerous fencing that needs replacing, we can remove and dispose of it as part of the installation. Barbed wire, rotten posts, and collapsed stock fencing are all hazards on an equestrian property — particularly for horses that like to lean, rub, or investigate their boundaries.

We pull old posts, remove wire and nails, and take everything off site so you are left with a clean line ready for new fencing. If the existing post holes are still usable, we can often reuse them to reduce the amount of excavation needed for the new installation.

Repair and maintenance

Not all fencing jobs require a full replacement. If you have a few rotten posts, broken rails, or a sagging gate, we can carry out targeted repairs to extend the life of your existing fencing.

We also replace individual kickboards on arenas, re-hang gates that have dropped, and tighten or replace wire on stock fencing. Regular maintenance is far cheaper than waiting until the whole fence line needs replacing, so it is worth addressing problems as they appear.
